Product Description

Product Description

Discover international football's REAL champions! We all love the official World Cup, but it only comes around every four years...Welcome to the unofficial alternative. What if football's world championships pitched teams into a continuous series of boxing-style title matches running way back to the very first international game in 1872? That's the idea behind the Unofficial Football World Championships (UFWC) - probably the least-known but most exciting football competition on Earth. The UFWC title has been contested by almost 100 nations at more than 800 matches spanning over 130 years. Its amazing story involves legendary teams and footballing minnows, classic finals and forgotten friendlies, and celebrated players and unsung heroes. This official guide to the UFWC is packed full of classic matches, key players, and fascinating statistics. Irreverent and entertaining, it adds up to an alternative soccer history - and represents a fresh perspective on the most beloved sport in the world.

About the Author

Paul Brown is a freelance feature writer and author. He wrote about the Unofficial Football World Championships in the October 2004 issue of FourFourTwo magazine. He is the author of football books Balls: Tales From Football's Nether Regions (2005) and Black & White Army (2003), and true crime tale The Rocketbelt Caper (2005). He lives near Newcastle upon Tyne and supports Newcastle United and England. Praise for Balls: Tales From Football's Nether Regions: -'Football has been given compendiums of curiosities before, but surely none so comprehensive... this could become your bible.' FourFourTwo -'A bountiful year for football readers who prefer left-field to legendary. The best of the bunch, Paul Brown's Balls.' The Independent -'Full of so many ridiculous football anecdotes it's kind of like the bastard child of Billy Connolly and Bobby Robson, but in book form.' Ice

5.0 out of 5 stars An official guide to an unofficial competition!, 5 Jul 2006
If you're not already aware of the UFWC (check out the official website) it's a fantastic "unofficial" way of working out the international football champions using a boxing-style system. This is billed as an official guide to the UFWC, and it does exactly what it says on the cover. But by tracing the "unofficial" competition's match lineage back to 1872 it manages to uncover loads of matches, players, and bizarre incidents you've never heard of. That's what makes football brilliant - you think you've seen it all, then something else comes along to amaze you! Paul Brown wrote Balls: Tales from Football's Nether Regions, and this is written in the same humorous style. I read this after England got knocked out of the World Cup and it really cheered me up!
