5.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable anthology, 21 Feb 2006
This is a very entertaining collection of short stories by new writers, and makes perfect bedtime reading. The stories are varied - some dark, some funny - but I enjoyed all of them for different reasons. Among my favourites, the first story by Stephen Shieber is just brilliantly dark, Robin Marsden's story Nine Lies is superbly crafted and touching, and Adam Maxwell's story about a guy being buried alive is a lot funnier than its premise suggests! The publishers say they set out to find talented new writers for this book, and I think they have succeeded. Unlike some other British short story anthologies, this is worthy but NOT dull. The book reminded me of some of the American anthologies I have enjoyed, like McSweeney's. Certainly if you like Dave Eggers, Michael Chabon, Amy Hempel, or even Raymond Carver, you'll find something to enjoy here. Nicely designed, and it's great value too, with 20 stories for under a tenner. Grab a copy and keep an eye out for these writers in the future...

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting New Fiction, 27 Feb 2006
By A Customer
The twenty stories in this anthology offer something for everyone's taste. Stephen Shieber's opening story, The Good Little Wife, is an explosive tale of domestic violence. In Sam Jackson's Dilemma, the central character receives some rather unusual jumble on behalf of his local church. Nick Montgomery's The Last Smoker is a timely reminder of where our anti-smoking culture is headed. And Phil Jell's Elastic Belt was probably my favourite read - a dark piece full of regret and foreboding. Other highlights include Fiona Case's The Jellyfish and Come Walk with Me on the Wild Side, Sweet Jesus by PA Tanton.

It's often said that the short story is in crisis. This anthology proves that it's alive and kicking.

5.0 out of 5 stars A goody-bag of short stories, 8 Mar 2006
By M. Holmes "allkhat" (England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a rare collection of short stories. They all seem to have something to say about life. It's like delving into a goody-bag and not being sure what you will get, when you read them for the first time. I particularly liked two of these stories, "The Good Little Wife" by Stephen Shieber - a chilling little tale and "Bookshelves" by Jolene Hui, which is the complete opposite, a real sweet story. That's not to say the rest of the collection isn't good, it is. If you like short stories, buy this and enjoy!!
