Product Description

Book Description

Memory, Loss and Longing draws together Martin Togher’s work from the last decade. The poems include musings on north London events and people, as well as contemplations of his childhood and lost friendships.

From the Publisher

The book contains 30 poems which draw out the humour, banality and ironies of life. Partially influenced by his work as a housing officer, which brings Martin into close contact with a wide range of north London residents, and partly written by trawling through his own childhood memories, the book is a hymn to the complexities of modern life. He contemplates old men and the contents of their shopping baskets, the act of exchanging phone numbers with strangers, what to do with the presentation tin which wraps a bottle of whiskey, and the heat of summer nights.

5.0 out of 5 stars no-frills poetry., 8 Aug 2007
By dodgepot (london) - See all my reviews
this is a great little book. equal parts funny and thought provoking. one of the things i like about the poems in this book is that they are quite "no-frills" - they seem to be about the day-to-day, the normal, the mundane (but in a good way). there's no going over the top with symbolism or metaphor or getting-out-the-theasaurus-cos-i'm-writing-poetry. they remind me a bit of magnus mills' books, but in poetry form. whether that's a good thing or not is for you to decide.

What a unique person Mr Togher is! Half-Irish, half-English and half-wildman of Hackey, his poems arouse, engage and almost physically excited me and they certainly fully entered me - and I mean that in a very real and meaningful sense. After reading his anthology I want to meet the poet, perhaps take him out for a round of drinks, sing a few old army songs, clap my hands and then play golf. I sense I could beat him (over 18 holes), but he would make it memorable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Stuff, 15 April 2009
By LDR (London) - See all my reviews
The first thing that struck me about the collection of poems is their simplicity in both language and the everyday themes they address. I find a lot of poetry hard work and am often discouraged by the flowery language. I appreciate that may be down to laziness on my part.
However, the accessibility of Martin's poems I found a real strength in his writing. I also identified strongly with his subject matter. I felt that many of his poems could have been about me and my experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his poems and once started did not want to stop, even reading them out loud to my Wife. I don't think I've ever been gripped by poetry in such a way, never really giving it a chance in the past. I don't know enough to provide a useful critique about rhythm, form and line (yet). All I can say it feels right and has kindled an interest in poetry that I didn't believe I had.

I don't read poetry normally. I received this as a gift. But the poems are fascinating and frank. It was an engrossing read. Read more
