Synopsis
This title is suitable for ages 9-14. When a small Jack Russell called Max arrives at an old house one wild and stormy night, no one is very surprised, least of all Meg, the West Highland terrier who lives there. The adventures that follow in and around the magical garden and nearby forest are assisted not only by all the other dogs of the forest, but also by an ancient dynasty of crows led by Alderbaron Sir Worstnip of the Blackwing Dynasty of Grand Crows. The friends rally together to carry out a daring rescue with the help of dogs from the past and present. Legends of the forest are made and remembered forever. The mystery of Grandma and her old house are just that...a mystery!

The author manages to combine touching moments with gentle humour to appeal to young and old alike. Real-life locations are merged with magical elements to create a believable and original fantasy. A whole army of creatures are brought vividly to life - we particularly enjoyed the haughty crows and irascible geese!
A must for dog lovers who will enjoy the familiar foibles of mans best friend portrayed here. It's also cleverly illustrated throughout.

A really super story book told in an old fashioned way. The descriptive passages are excellent and bring the dogs to life. The illustrations are great and colurful, especially The Alderbaron, Sir Worstnip the very important crow. I loved it and recognised some of the areas described and also one or two of the dogs.

Lent this to my friend for her children to read, and it ended up being read at school so still waiting for it back. So enjoyed this book, Jack Russell characteristics are exactly captured, and two lovely little subplots whereby rescue dogs get a happy ending give you such a nice, warm feeling. And love the crows! The sort of book that never stays on the shelf that long!
