Michael and Emma, who we met in the first book in the series, have escaped from the farmhouse, and are now living in a motorhome. They become convinced that the Army has a secret underground base nearby, and they are determined to find it. Meanwhile, in the City, dozens of other survivors have holed up in a university complex, which is becoming more and more beseiged by the walking dead. The cadavers seem to have developed an angry murdering instinct towards the survivors. They are attracted by the slightest noise, and quickly congregate en-masse when they hear any survivors nearby. There are some highly memorable touches in this story. The scene where two of the survivors, fully knowing it's their last night alive, make for a nearby pub to get as drunk as is humanly possible, whilst the cadavers eventually break in on them, stands out.

This is an excellent series, and the opening up of the action in this one, bringing in many new characters, compliments the claustrophobic intimacy of the first book. The characters in these stories feel so REAL. They could be people you know. I've read that the author wanted to get away from the all-American square-jawed hero, and he's done this superbly. I seem to have been waiting for years for somebody to breathe new life into the horror genre, far away from screeching American high school students, vile descriptions of graphic sexual assaults on women, serial murders that feel like something out of a computer game, and pantomime villains, and Moody has succeeded. This is horror for grown-ups ... at long last!

“Autumn: The City” is the second book of the four part post-apocalyptic zombie saga by David Moody. The book starts off from the same point in time as that of the first book “Autumn”, but from the perspective of some other survivors who are all based within a huge urban city. Like in the first novel, the events quickly take off, with the desperate situation throwing the few survivors left into a complete state of shock. The novel homes in on there emotional responses and the mental stress each and every character is put under. David weaves a dark tale of tension and uncertain suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning. As the story unfolds, you meet up with the original two main characters Michael and Emma from the first novel whilst the horrific events turn quickly for the worse. The story climbs towards a dramatic ending that will leave you gasping once you’ve finished.

David show’s a great talent with his writing, keeping the reader absorbed in the tale and feeling emotionally attached to the unfortunate survivors. The slow development of the zombies characteristics are well thought through and help build upon this truly breath-taking read.

This book, and indeed the whole “Autumn” series, is highly recommended to any zombie or horror fan. Once you’ve read the first novel you’re going to want to read them all!!!!

I'm not a prolific writer of reviews on amazon, this is my first and it's just to support a great writer who truly understands story telling.
David seems to have grasped that elusive thing that is the art of writing a really good tale.
In the tradition of Joe Lansdale he writes very human stories that we can all relate to and paces them fantastically. Moody seems to be able to get into the head of the reader and present something instantly accessible, it's not that David's books are high brow literary masterpeices, what they are is great reads!
Zombies, the end of the world and ordinary people trying to make sense of it all, what more could you ask for?
