5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent summary of Hinduism, 10 April 2005
By Rishi Sethi (Middlesex, UK) - See all my reviews
This book is an excellent resource for all Western learners of Hinduism. What is entirely unique about this book is that it is written by a Hindu. This may seem surprising, but many previously published textbooks on Hinduism are Abrahemic interpretations of the religion.

Instead of emphasis being placed on ideas like 'Many Gods,' 'Caste System' and 'worshipping idols,' which are moslty wrongly portrayed, the book explores the concept of God, reverence for living organisms, importance of scriptures, and religion in daily life in the first five chapters, and the application of religious beliefs and teachings to issues such as rationality, Euthanasia anbd abortion, wealth and poverty, philosophy of the universe and suffering and the portrayal of Hinduism by the Western media in the last 5 chapters.

It also dispels Western misinterpretations of Hinduism being a polytheistic religion (having many different Gods and Goddesses) and provides rebuttals to Western criticisms on certain aspects of Hindu beliefs and values.

Therefore this book offers an insight into what Hinduism really is and how it has evolved since the ancient times. The colourful pictures and layout allow an ease of comprehension of the knowledge contained in the text and it has been a pleasure to read.

The book is aimed mostly at secondary students; the first five chapters cover GCSE syllabuses in Hinduism and the last five cover both GCSE and parts of A Level syllabuses. It has also been designed for readers not involved in education.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Effort, 13 April 2005
This book make a genuine attempt in explaining Hinduism in a contemporary and a comprehensive manner.

Very difficult to choose my favourite sections in the book. However I was especially impressed with the chapter on rationality and religion (chapter 6), and Wealth and poverty (chapter 9).

It explains why rationality in religion is necessary if more people are to be encouraged to lead spiritual lives.

The author also tackles many controversial issues head on and explains how Hinduism views them, like euthanasia, abortion, Gay rights and role of women in society.

An ideal book to read for all persons, especially Western person who want a good basic understanding on Hinduism

Well done !!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to understand religion and Hinduism, 1 April 2005
The author has done real justice to the subject. This is book for all ages. It covers the subject in a very easy to understand manner and keeps the person completely absorbed. I purchased this book for myself - and I found it difficult to put it down. I gave the copy to my niece who is studing for her GCSE's exams in religious study - and her feedback was - I beginning to understand and appreciate what religion and Hinduism is all about. The rational approach to religion refreshes the ancient messages. The use of metaphors - drives the message home. This book challenges the reader to understand their own beliefs and succeeds in taking the reader to a voyage of discovery.
