5.0 out of 5 stars Seeing Inside (from the outside) - The Last Days of Johnny North, 11 May 2006
By Mrs. E. J. H. Crinnion (Portsmouth UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had to buy this book of short stories after seeing the author, Dave Swann, entertainingly rattle off a story or two on his launch-tour. I wasn't disappointed: It's every bit as readable, witty, deliciously strange and satisfying as I expected.
There's a gran with a van with no brakes. There are tangible hurts - and yearnings. There are end-of-the-world skies and grass that grows white. There are breezing currents of air and undercurrents that audibly breathe. And the dialogue of each of the many odd and lovely characters is consistently, convincingly, alive.
But beyond my expectations, these stories are put together with poetic precision. I thought I was in for a succession of tasty top-notch snacks and I got gourmet soul-food meals. I've cheerfully read whole novels with less content - and beauty - than any one of these stories... These are pure things that will reach the darkest depths and brightest heights of the self - they seem to casually ask - how deep d'you wanna go?
The individual stories stand alone, but my pleasure in them grew the more I understood them as a collection...
This is a book that made me laugh, weep, think, yearn, shiver, feel, smile.
This book made me cry, YES!
From the inside - out loud.
