Product Description

Book Description
This book is the personal account of one woman's legal battle against the UK government over their mass-cull policy during the foot-and-mouth outbreak in 2001.

Janet Hughes, who trained as an environmental science teacher, witnessed the horrifying killing of healthy farm animals in her locality of Mid-Wales from March through to the summer of 2001. The book details her journey of embarking upon a legal challenge against the government over their contiguous culling of thousands of healthy sheep on the Brecon Beacons in South Powys, Wales.

From the Author
Due to the courts not permitting a case to go forward, this book is my way of bringing the truth into the public domain.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Killing Pens of the Brecon Beacons, 30 Oct 2004
Although the FMD epidemic of 2001 is over its legacy consists of a profound distrust of the Government's policy; great sadness at the slaughter of millions of uninfected animals; apprehensions concerning the likelyhood of return of the disease.

One woman's courageous crusade against the now thought to be illegal 'right to slaughter' and in particular the threat to the hefted flocks of the Brecon Beacons is recounted in 'The Killing Pens '. In order to make a legal challenge against and to request a judicial review of DEFRA's mass slaughter policy the author purchased ten sheep from a Beacons flock to qualify as a grazier. There followed a gruelling encounter with the legal system, including 'inaccuracies' in the reporting of the numbers of infected sheep within the hefted flocks, given under oath by the CVO.

However, don't let me pre-empt the book. If you have any pangs of conscience about what is happening to farming in the UK, want to glimpse the depths to which 'official'political policies will sink in order to uphold the cruelly undertaken and out-dated policy of dealing with an epizootic by the medieval mass slaughter of livestock, mainly sheep, you should purchase this book. Suffice to say that the author, supported by her family and a handful of loyal friends, achieved more than could have been hoped for against the rampaging force of DEFRA and other bodies of officialdom.

'The Killing Pens' illuminates some of the darker areas of the Government machine and produces great respect for its author.
