Product Description

Product Description
This book sets out the strategies which work when fighting decisions by councils and big business which disrupt the community, from school closures and new bypasses to telephone masts and green field developments. It shows how to create a well organised civil protest to overturn these decisions and save the neighbourhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a godsend!, 26 Sep 2005
I'm currently involved in a campaign to prevent a mobile phone mast being erected at the bottom of our street. No one round here wants it, but that seems to carry no weight at all. We've been desperate to find an effective way to beat the planners and comms corporation but it seems like a David vs Goliath task. I found this book after reading a review of it in the Daily Telegraph. It's been exactly what we needed; at last we feel we know what to do and how to do it, and our campaign no longer feels like a lost cause. The book tells you how to organise the campaign, what to do and how to do it. The author wrote Yes, Minister and he obviously knows how bureaucrats think. The book is exceedingly clever and a good read. But most importantly it shows you how to win your campaign. An absolute must for anyone struggling to get the bureaucrats to listen to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Detailed Guide to Dealing with Bureaucrats, 3 Dec 2007
By William Cohen (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Antony Jay is famous for his Yes, Minister scripts. I felt a bit uneasy about this book at the start, seeing it as a manual for civic sabotage of Government projects. Just the sort of thing that colossal snobs who read the Daily Telegraph would use to protect their property prices.

It is a bit old-fashioned. The idea of having campaign songs and even motivating the professionals in your community to put time and effort into working together to frustrate a project is a little dated. Fact is people are too busy, unless it affects their property prices. It might happen in picturesque English villages, but in most towns, I think you might struggle to get the support that Jay says is necessary.

But this book does show great insights into how the political and media process works. Especially what motivates people in Government jobs. And in the end he points out that win or lose, any campaign that encourages different people in the community to stand up and act together can only benefit the community and strengthen democracy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone running a campaign, 2 Aug 2007
By Ian Wild "YourMathsTutor" (Worcestershire, UK) - See all my reviews

I have been involved in local campaigns for years and this is the one book I wish I had read before I started. Very well written, highly informative and brimming with vital information on how the system works (which is what you need to know if you are going to fight it). If you are involved in a local campaign yourself then buy it. If you know someone involved in a campaign then make them buy it. Or buy it for them.
