Product Description

Product Description

This is a mountain biking guidebook to the Yorkshire Dales. "Yorkshire Dales Mountain Biking - The North Dales" is a user-friendly guide to the best riding in one of the country's most MTB-friendly national parks. The Yorkshire Dales have the lot: short riverside cruises on good trails, epic rides taking in big views, moorland singletrack and rubble-strewn descents; restored bridleways, dedicated bike 'stables' and picturesque towns and villages - everything a rider needs for a good trip. Covering Swaledale, Wensleydale, Arkengarthdale, Langstrothdale and the Howgill Fells, this guide contains 24 routes from 8 to 60km long. Drawn up using clear, easy-to-follow directions and graded for difficulty, they are plotted onto Harvey MTB-specific maps, profiled to show height gain and illustrated with colour photography throughout. A special bonus section introduces the best downhill runs, climbs and cruises in the area, as well as a selection of 'road climbs to make you wince'! This is the companion guide to "Yorkshire Dales Mountain Biking - The South Dales" (0954813162). Nick Cotton is a 'Cycle Route Consultant' and a well-known and respected guidebook writer. He has written over 30 bike guides in the last 12 years, riding more than 20,000 miles across Britain during the course of his research.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only guide to the area to buy, 24 April 2008
By A. Cherry (Sheffield, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Great book, bought after doing some routes and having some great weekends camping from the the South Dales book.

I'd never ridden this area before properly but with this guide it makes you feel like a local. Great routes, great maps (yes proper maps to follow - no need forn the o/s) and great tips on the areas. Pubs, shops and campsites (very useful) etc. Something for everyone no matter what your fitness - but i esp like the 'Killers' section :o)

Another stonking guide in my ever growing V-graphics collection.

Like I've said these are up to date routes, written by people who ride now rather than outdated guides full of b/w pictures of people carrying fully rigid bikes from the 80's.

Great stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, 4 Mar 2007
This book is great

It starts off with a bit about biking and then some basic info about biking in he Dales (Maps needed etc)

The routes are divided up into 4 Sections with a 5th bonus section

Section 1 - Classics
Section 2 - Epics
Section 3 - Enduros
Section 4 - Killers

All routes are niceley laid out with Elevation data, total ascent, start / finish info. Pubs in the area and cafes. I have done most of the routes in the book and many more than once. Its written in such an easy to follow way with some humor thrown in for good measure, although the book is expensive, I do feel you get value for money! A great must have for all MTBRS

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Intro to a Great Area, 10 April 2007
Well I don't live in the Yorkshire Dales, and until recently hadn't even been, this book - bought on a whim, inspired my first visit.

I will be going back.

The book brings alive this part of the world, it is obviously written by people with a lot of local knowledge and passion for the area, the route choices seem excellent - although I have so far only ridden three routes, they have all been excellent - revealing great mountain biking and great Dales scenery. The mapping is clear and easy to follow, the descriptions work well with the maps, and follow landmarks on the ground, rather than simple left and then right descriptions. The ride introductions are an accurate reflection of the type of terrain and riding to be encountered, and are thus excellent for planning.

On the downside this is the first mountain bike guide I have ever bought, so to be fair I don't have a bench mark to compare it with, also the rides often bisect interesting looking trails, there is often no mention as to where these go and what they are like in the text - something I found frustrating.

All in all though - if you want to go away for a great weekends riding - get this book.

I bought this as a companion to the South Dales guide and it certainly doesn't disappoint. It features more of the well described routes, ranging from short blasts to long... Read more
