Product Description

About the Author
John McBarron was born in 1928 into a family that fared no better than others in the poverty-stricken East End of Glasgow. He left school at the age of 14 and joined his father in the family grocery store (the wee shop) just down from Celtic Park. At barely 17 he became seriously frustrated with his limited life and with a hunger to improve his limited education he developed a passion for reading. In his mid-twenties he chose to forego the opportunity to join Glasgow University on the grounds of his father’s illness requiring family support in the shop.

At the age of 32 he went to London to explore its cosmopolitan culture and whether his thoughts on becoming a writer had any merit. Some 25 years later he took early retirement from the Gillette Company, Boston, as a Senior International Consultant in Corporate Management Information Systems. He now lives happily in Glasgow not far removed from Celtic Park.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasurable read, 13 May 2004
By A Customer
Hospitalised with a broken back (compounded with Tuberculosis) at the age of three, John McBarron ("Barney") relates his right of passage in Glasgow's poverty stricken East End.

Emerging after 4 years of treatment in the years leading up to World-War II, all of the gritty reality, violence, yet indefatigable humour that is woven into the "Glesga" cultural fabric is potrayed faithfully.

In the not too distant world that had no television and little radio, "ra peepul" relied on their own self-made entertainment, the occasional cinema trip but especially the weekly tribal battles know as the 'fitba' and 'ra dancin''.

Alternately moving and laugh-out-loud funny, the author perfectly conveys the mood of the times and the character and spirit with which every Scot can identify.
