While exploring the unused sections of the Ancient city of Atlantis, Major John Sheppard and Dr. Rodney McKay stumble on a recording device that contains a new Stargate address. The address leads them to a world with a mysterious ruined city that may be part of an Ancient repository, or it may just be yet another trap for the unwary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quick, light read but very enjoyable, 30 May 2006
In this book Sheppard and his team are doing something I would have liked to see more often in STA: exploring the city itself. I am sure, there must be a lot of interesting places and also discoveries waiting to happen. More accurately, in this book they are exploring a different ancient city. There are parallels but first of all differences. This new city is a very spooky, dangerous place full of dark mysteries. The author captured the atmosphere very well indeed and that includes how this place affects the team.

The one living inhabitant they find provides more questions than answers and soon afterwards things get progressively worse. Some of what happens is predictable but was no less gripping to me, other revelations were definitely a surprise. What I liked is that no technobabble was involved and that everything made sense without any phantastic twists and turns that feel forced.

Sheppard is the main character in this story but McKay plays an important part, too. That is not a surprise but on the other hand, they are my favourite characters of the series and they didn`t disappoint me in this book. Everything we know from TV is also found in this story and it felt to me like meeting old friends.

Sheppard certainly needed help sometimes but he is mainly carrying the story. Of course it is obvious that he won`t die but nevertheless, that didn`t stop me from feeling very much with him how he struggled to find solutions to save his people but had to struggle with his own physical and mental problems at the same time. I think it would have made this book more powerful if, as it was with McKay, Sheppard would also have to face some of his personal weaknesses during this ordeal and learn from it.

Nevertheless, I think people who like Sheppard and McKay would enjoy this book, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent SG: Atlantis book, 6 May 2006
By Alison Johnson "Alipeeps" (North of England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I really enjoyed this book. I actually found the characterisation to be pretty good and the author really seemed to capture the personalities of particularly Sheppard and McKay very well. Admittedly there wasn't a great deal for Ford and Teyla to do but then the same can be said of the show itself at times.. it's hard to pay off every major character in one show/novel. I thought the plot was intruiging and suspenseful with some great dramatic developments. A good depiction of the friendship between McKay and Sheppard and some good writing for other more occasional characters too such as Carson and Zelenka. All in all, I loved it and have read it several times over already! If you're a fan of Atlantis then you'll enjoy this book. Oh and if you're a fan of Shep whumping then.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 25 Mar 2006
By Katt (CORNWALL United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in 2 days. It has a real feel of the series about it and the author has managed to capture all the show's characters perfectly. The snark between John and Rodney really hits the mark and some of Rodney's sarcasm had me laughing out loud.

It's a good story which kept my interest and had elements of mystery, danger, humour and friendship.

If you like the show, especially the interaction between John and Rodney, you'll enjoy this book.
