4.0 out of 5 stars Packed with anecdotes and well researched data, 17 Aug 2004
By A Customer
"This book has been a long time in coming. Millican Dalton was a local character who is bound to be remembered by many people in the area and his life deserves to be chronicled. Matthew Entwistle's book is packed with anecdotes and well-researched data on the life of this Professor of Adventure. Millican Dalton was born a Cumbrian of a well-to-do family and was educated at the Quaker Friends School in Wigton where he received his philosophy of life. A pacifist, vegetarian and an abstainer from intoxicating liquors he nevertheless enjoyed his chain-smoking and gallons of black coffee! His caveman life in the summertime in a disused slate quarry on the slopes of Castle Crag in Borrowdale made him a local eccentricity. However, he was a rock climber of international repute who led groups of walkers and climbers throughout the Lake District.

He was often to be seen on his homemade raft on the River Derwent and many photographs of his craft, his cave and numerous expeditions both in the Lakes and abroad are included in the book. He was also the subject of a comprehensive article in the Daily Mirror in January 1941 when he evacuated to his cave to avoid the bombing in the London area. He even wrote several letters to Winston Churchill in 10 Downing Street calling for an immediate end to WW2 as it was interfering with his liberty! He did not elicit any response.

This book is a very enjoyable read and a copy should find its way onto the bookshelves of every hotel and guest house in the area. I'm certain that this folklore will add interest for holiday makers and perhaps a visit to his cave on the Grange to Rosthwaite path will prove a joy for even the least adventurous walker."
