Product Description

Book Description
James and Other Apes is a collection of 50 close-up portraits of gorillas, chimpanzees, orang-utans and bonobos. The images are so strong and the featured apes - all named, with personal histories - so human-like that the viewer is forced to question the dividing line between man and animal. Photographed in sanctuaries across Africa and Asia, the apes photographed here are mainly victims of the trade in bush meat that threatens their existence. This book also serves as a powerful and moving argument for the protection of these marvellous beasts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fine pics, 27 Aug 2005

This review is from: James & Other Apes (Hardcover)
A selection of head-and-shoulder portraits of great apes in captivity. It does a great job of showing the variety within a single species, as well as emphasising the kinship between humans and these other apes. Aside from the foreword, the only text within the book is a couple of sentences on each of the individuals photographed. This gives a moving cumulative impression of individual tragedy, as most of the apes pictured are living in sanctuaries, having been rescued from the pet trade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Inspirational and Beautiful Book, 6 Jan 2007
By Lucy Tripp "paranormal pixie" (Brighton, Sussex, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This review is from: James & Other Apes (Hardcover)
You get a real sense of how close to humans apes actually are looking through this book. Each individual has their own facial expressions and traits - each as beautiful as the next. There are also biographies at the back on some of those apes featured in the book, detailing how they got to be at the sanctuary, which is usually after being snatched from their mother in the wild, who was killed for bushmeat.

Others books featuring images of apes are usually those exploiting animals in the entertainment industry - it is refreshing to be able to view a book like this with images of apes who are in re-introduction programmes and santuaries, where they have been saved from such exploitation.

This book is not only beautiful, but educational and inspirational at encouraging those who read it to help save our closest relatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos!, 18 Dec 2006
This review is from: James & Other Apes (Hardcover)
Absolutely wonderful pictures of gorillas, chimpanzees and Orang-utans. All photos are head shots that capture the essence of each animal. Some pictures make you smile like Wendy and a few like Katie make you sad. It's true the eyes are windows to the soul!

The book is set up so there is a full color photo of an ape on one page the oppisite page is blank except for their name.

There is a short bio on each animal in the back of the book. It's abit frustrating to have to keep flipping the pages back and forth to read the info and find the picture or vice versa. I would have loved to have the bios of each animal on the opposite page for a better user-friendly approach.

This is why I have rated this book 4 stars instead of five.

However it's a lovely book and I higly recommend it.
