1.0 out of 5 stars If Jones can get a book published, then surely anyone can!, 26 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This is getting a lot of local publicity as the author/illustrator lives in Edinburgh and seems to spend a huge amount of time doing promotional events. And I can't deny that it seems to be popular with little girls. But wouldn't you rather raise your children on quality books instead of this tripe? The illustrations are insipid, the writing downright poor, the plots falling into the very worst category of wish fulfillment where every little girl *can* be a princess and no worthy goals are actually aspired to. In fact, Princess Poppy spends most of this book demanding birthday presents off her friends and family and feeling disappointed that no one is meeting her demands until, guess what? At the end she is rewarded with lots of presents. Surprise! If any little girls I know behaved like this they'd be lucky to get any presents at all, let alone be the heroine of a series of books. How Jones got this contract is a complete mystery to me, but it goes to show that surely anyone can get a book published. Just don't buy into this rubbish by actually purchasing it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why so harsh?, 5 Nov 2006
Perhaps the previous reviewer should re-read the book and be a bit more careful about the words they choose.

Where the following - "Princess Poppy spends most of this book demanding birthday presents off her friends and family and feeling disappointed that no one is meeting her demands" - comes from I have no idea. It certainly isn't in the book! Princess Poppy demands nothing other than to have someone remember that it is her birthday. But as they are all planning a surprise party for her, they pretend to have forgotten and/or be too busy.

What the book really is about, is impatience and trust... something all children could benefit from. It's not Burnett - it's a picture book!
