Product Description

Synopsis
The Grammar Cookbook is an easy-to-read reference that shows you how to avoid the most common grammatical errors. It is presented in a non-technical, easy-going style in a topic-per-page format: browse through it at your leisure or quickly look up the answers to specific questions.

Excerpted from The Grammar Cookbook [E-BOOK: ADOBE READER] by P. Bensky. Copyright © 0. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
hanged or hung?

Hanged is used only when referring to the hanging of a person by the neck with the intention of killing him or her.

In all other cases, hung is the past tense of hang.

EXAMPLES:

Correct: The murderer is going to be hanged at dawn.
Incorrect: The murderer is going to be hung at dawn.

Correct: We hung your picture on the wall.
Incorrect: We hanged your picture on the wall.

What about "Hung, drawn, and quartered", then? Shouldn't it be "Hanged, drawn and quartered"?

No, and this is why: "Hanged" is used when a person is hung by the neck with the intention of causing death. Being hung, drawn, and quartered is a rather different, very grisly, way to die: the person is not intended to die from the hanging but instead-slowly, painfully, and with a great deal of mess-by being slit open so that his guts spill out, and then chopped up into quarters.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a 'Must Have'., 23 Nov 2004
Using this book is so easy - I'm tempted to buy it in bulk and give my fellow office staff a copy each for Christmas! I walked into my office and listened to an argument that had continued over lunch and was well into the afternoon. The subject: When to use an Apostrophe. Why does it matter and what does it mean anyway? Going straight to my Grammar Cookbook and quickly finding the page I needed, with no explanation from me, I offered the open book round the office. Within a couple of minutes, the subject was read...AND understood !!
All I got was, "Where were you three hours ago when we needed you". Needless to say, they all know where my Grammar Cookbook is kept now for future quick and extremely easy explanations. If you are writing a book, or even your first letter in a while, the Grammar Cookbook is a great investment and will save you time and embarrassment at a later date. This is a must buy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must if you want to communicate more effectively, 22 Jul 2004
By S. A. Frost "saf" (Thailand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
At last, an easily understood book that can help us all to avoid common errors in the modern usage of the English language. We are blessed with a powerful language with which we can express even the most subtle of thoughts and feelings and yet we seem to make such poor use of it. Pat's book is simple and enjoyable to use and very practical. I can imagine that it will be one of those books that runs into many editions, all the time being added to as more abuses of the English language come to light. The only reason that I have not given the book all 5 stars is that it could usefully be ten times the size and I want to encourage Pat to add to it!
