Product Description

Book Description

Revealed here is not only the history of the City Churches but also many surprising activities. You can find Dick Whittington’s tomb, a ‘camembert cheese’ altar, the Samaritans’ first telephone, the pulpit used for 28 years by the author of Amazing Grace, the pulpit where Jeffrey Archer appeared, the priory featured in Four Weddings and A Funeral and the church mentioned in a Shakespeare play.

Inside these churches today, in addition to worship, can be found the London Centre for Spirituality, the National Interpreting Service, The Court of Arches, the Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, the Mission to Seafarers and two restaurants. The historic churches, in the ancient heart of the capital, are shown in their modern role as Christian centres reaching out beyond London and the United Kingdom.

About the Author

Paul Middleton is an architect who in the 1990s with the uncertainty over the future of the City Churches was inspired to find out more. The intention was to capture their atmosphere in a set of drawings. These were later exhibited at St Giles Cripplegate in the Barbican. As a result he founded the annual City Churches Walk now organised by the Friends of the City Churches. A limited edition card set of the drawings was published and a number featured in the City Churches publication City Events. He has travelled extensively, researched sacred space in different religious traditions and designed an ecumenical chapel in India.

Leigh Hatts is the former editor of the Diocese of London newspaper London Link and City Events. Earlier he was The Catholic Herald arts correspondent. His recent books include walking guides to two rivers: The Thames Path and The Lea Valley Walk.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal companion to a City 'church crawl', 27 Jan 2007
By Greshon (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Middleton and Hatts clearly love their subject. Every City church is succinctly introduced and described in clear text, with an accompanying sketch. You can sense the presence of a lot of knowledge behind these introductions.

A map with a suggested route would be of help. With so many churches crammed into such a small area, planning a crawl is difficult
