This excellent book has been long waited for, John has obviously put a lot of effort into this fine book.
He offers a personnel insight into this wonderful part of Germany, with tips on where and what to drink along with foods available, there are even some recipes.
There is also some very good basic tourist information.
On the whole a very useful book for the traveller wether they go or just sit and dream of fine beer.

This is an extremely informative and useful book. Conen not only provides a complete description of all the local beers and the terminology needed to purchase and appreciate them. He also provides a guide to the types of food that you are likely to find in a bierkeller, including names and dishes that are unique to Franconia. I bought this on the way out of Bamberg, and I'm keeping it as a reference for the next trip, so I can visit some of the outlying bier establishments that the author describes. Lovingly and carefully done, this book is a very nice effort. I heartily recommend this to anyone visiting Franconia/northern Bavaria.

Bamberg, with its Unesco World Heritage status and 9 breweries, is a special place. I have visited it before using earlier editions of the guide and found the books excellent for finding the best breweries and pubs. This edition provides more information on the local beers and hostelries and makes particlular reference to the local smoked beers and to the Ungespundet beer where the CO2 pressure is released during conditioning. The guide has been expanded to include more tourist and cultural information so enabling good use to be made of the time between visits to the beer gardens. The colour photographs make it into a bookshelf guide as well as a reference book for the beer enthusiast.
