5.0 out of 5 stars The Scots Examined, 24 Jun 2004
By MS AVERIL LEIMON (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
As a Scot, I found this book compellingly readable, enlightening and challenging. Carol Craig sweeps across history, religion, psychology, economics and philosophy to analyse the complex nature of the Scot. This is no mere sentimental tartan celebration of all our achievements. She is brave in her criticism and fierce in her desire to improve the lot of the next generation of Scots. She argues for a change to the lethal combination of arrogance and humility that holds many Scots back, while retaining the best traditions of striving for the common good and valuing equality without resenting succes. A good book for Scots wanting to examine themselves and also for non Scots to understand their Scottish friends!
