Product Description
The Third Alternative, August 2003
This collection is one any serious lover of short fiction will want on their shelves.

Book Description
Sleepwalkers contains eleven contemporary slow-burning tales which dig deep into the human psyche, spreading unease and unsettling fears. Fusing crime with passion, hope with despair, Arnott's strong characterisation imbues each story with a poignant realism that transcends cultural and historical boundaries. Whether metaphorically or literally her creations sleepwalk through their nightmares, their dreams, and their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Time Goes By, 28 Feb 2005
By Jonathan K. Stephens (Stoney Creek, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Reading Marion Arnott is like a beautiful February afternoon. You look out, the sky is blue and cloudless, the sun cheerfully lights up the world with a warm ambient glow; but beware! The minute you stick you wee little nose out the door, Jack Frost gives it a good hard nip!

All is not what it initially seems in Arnott's work. Arnott is a master of misdirection; of the quick turn of plot, keeping the reader off-balance while she whispers directly to the outsider in all of us. For one recurring theme in this collection, is this nature of the outsider in society. From the newspaper columnist's 'Cabaret'-like exile to the apparently bucolic pastoral villages of East Prussia at the dawn of the Third Reich (where all is most certainly not what it seems), in the award winning "Prussian Snowdrops" to Charlie's painful drawn torment when remembrance of things past inexorably intrudes at his father's death-bed vigil, in "Dollface", Arnott never shies away from what's revealed as she kicks over the rocks on the surface of polite human society. Eschewing genre restrictions, like the most interesting writers of the day, Arnott is faithful to the integrity of each story, skillfully reporting back to us, with honest compassion, like the old saw says "we have met the enemy and they are us".

Inexplicably, although 'Sleepwalkers' is the publisher's bestselling title, the book is going out of print. So now's probably the time to snap up a copy; before the price goes out of sight on the rare book market.
