Synopsis

Thinking about buying a house in France? Not sure how to go about it or what's available in your price range? Then look no further than "French Property Buying Guide 2003", a practical guide for the serious French homebuyer from the publishers of "French Magazine". With more than 380 pages, "French Property Buying Guide 2003" is packed with buying advice, region and price guides, case studies and maps to make your search for a home in France as simple as possible. Featuring a comprehensive, authoritative and practical guide to the mechanics of buying a property in France, French Property Buying Guide 2003 helps you to work out what you can afford, shows how to recognise potential problems with some properties and get a survey arranged. Once you have found your dream home, how exactly do you go about buying a property in France? And how much do you really have to spend on solicitor's fees and taxes? Rowena Medlow answers these questions and more in this valuable guide. The guide profiles the history, culture, cuisine and idiosyncrasies of each of France's regions - are the street markets you find in Brittany really as good as those in the Dordogne? Where can you find the best wines? And where are the classiest seaside destinations? In addition, a 250-page colour price guide details more than 2000 properties illustrating house styles, estimated values and sold prices throughout France. Expertly researched and sourced from the elite of both the British and French property worlds, "French Property Buying Guide 2003" enables you to see exactly what you can get for your money in the different regions of France. With case studies of buyers of property from chateaux to village houses, and extensive listings of regional and national business contacts - from estate agents and solicitors, to tradesmen and letting specialists - "French Property Buying Guide 2003" demystifies the subject of buying a property in France and contains essential, up-to-date information for anyone thinking of investing in their own piece of France.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sales brochure, not a buying guide, 3 Jul 2003
By D. M. Stewart "FranceFan" (France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is not so much a buying guide, as promotional and advertising literature. There are approximately 16 pages of useful information (pages 18 through 33), although the same information is generally found in other books on buying in France. The rest of the book is divided into a sales pitch on France in general (including three “Case Studies” which would be more accurately described as ‘Testimonials’), explicit advertisements for businesses offering services and thinly disguised advertisements for estate agents (pages 106 to 383). It starts with advertisements and ends a list and contact details for same (pages 368 to 386). There is virtually nothing in terms of ‘buying guidance’; merely a token effort which I can only guess is made so that the sales pitch is a bit less obvious. I would describe this as a sales brochure, except it is too thick to be described as a brochure. It might be useful for people who are looking for this type of information, but certainly is worth very little as a buying guide.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 8 Jun 2003
By A Customer
If you are interested in buying property in France and want a detailed "how to," this book doesn't provide the detail. It is a very general overview and more of a sales brochure -- perhaps useful to the very uninitiated in French property purchases. Out of 384 pages, there are about 250 pages of property listings -- mostly those for sale, rather than showing prices sold. There are only 14 pages, given to the steps to buying.

2.0 out of 5 stars Colourful, informative but the balance is wrong, 13 May 2003
Initial impressions of this book are very good; the photography is excellent, it has informative reviews by region and good advice on renovation - indeed, for the first 100 or so pages it is a joy to read. The problem starts on page 108. The remaining 278 pages are devoted to adverts for properties which have been included 'to give the buyer as much detail as possible to help make searching for your dream home...as easy as possible'. Whilst I agree that examples are the best means of illustrating a point I would have preferred more advice and fewer examples.
