Product Description

Product Description
Arkady and Boris Strugatsky are by far the most famous Russian writers of science fiction. Their work influenced several generations of young Russians, opening up new horizons of intellectual freedom, combined with endless fun. 'Monday Starts on Saturday', the Russian equivalent of 'Harry Potter', was written 40 years earlier, and the whole business of dealing with magic happens in a scientific research facility rather than in the school. The main characters are young adults rather than school kids, but that doesn't make it any less funny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, weird, extremely enjoyable, 27 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I have read it twice already and want to order one for my friend.

Imagine yourself, a young serious professional getting a job in the Scientific Research Institute... for Thaumaturgy and Spellcraft. Imagine your normal working day... alongside wizards, fairy-tale characters, demons and dragons... Imagine trying to learn "their stuff".. I was laughing so much it brought tears to my eyes when I read how the poor "young professional" was trying to conjure his first sandwich :-)

Enjoy the read!

It think it may help if you are familiar with Russian fairy-tale characters but even without that you'll understand who is who and what is what. There are some descriptions at the end of the book and also I copied some descriptions below:

Naina Kievna=Baba Yaga, old witch, lives in a wooden hut on hen's legs in the middle of the forest and always tries to capture little boys (typically called Ivan) and eat them.
VIY = a monster ruling monster world. Has huge eyelids that his servants carry and open for him.
Tomcat Basil = fairy-tale cat from Pushkin's poem; lives on a tree near a place called Lukomorie; knows lots and lots of fairy-tales and songs.
Bald Mountain = where yearly witch gatherings are held.
Gorynitch = in the book, last name of Naina Kievna. In Russian folklore Zmei (dragon) Gorynitch is a huge three-headed fire breathing dragon that terrorises people.
