5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent insite into a taboo condition, 27 May 2002
This book makes compelling reading. It is an honest insite into an all too common condition which affects a larger part of the population than we would often like to admit.

In his book, Jason Pegler does not hold back from some vivid, often harrowing descriptions of manic depression, and how it can affect someone on a very deep level. Unfortunately, it is also a damning inditement of the NHS and its poor level of care to such patients, especially with a large percentage of mental hospitals being closed down.

I would recommend this book to mature readers (and some children of 11+ can fit into this category!) as it does contain strong language and vivid descriptions, but I found this book hard to put down, and a compelling read from cover to cover.

3.0 out of 5 stars a good start but not if you are after more., 11 Jun 2007
By daniel (london) - See all my reviews
this topic is close to my heart and i chose to buy this because chipmunkapublishing is doing such wonderful work and this was the book that helped start it all off.

its a good book, quite funny in places, does what it says on the tin and isn't as indepth as other books that i have read eg. an unquiet mind by kay redfield jamison & malignant sadness by lewis wolpert.

the writing style is pretty fresh, being a twentysomething he writes like a twentysomething and when you read the book, you will fly through it and by the end have a better understanding of the condition and realise the good that can come out of what to many can seem bleak.

if you want science then i recommend the two books mentioned above, both written by doctors who have experienced manic & clinical depression.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Can of Madness, 2 Nov 2005
Jason Pegler recounts in harrowing detail, his battle with his own form of mental illness, manic depression.

He bares his soul with gripping honesty, and takes the reader through the beautiful hell of his euphoria to the abyss of his despair.

Through his eyes, the reader relives his horrific pain, sorrow, humiliation, alienation, and the miraculous breakthrough of recovery.

Jason Pegler does not claim to have psychoanalytical training.

His message is one of enlightenment.

“Writing saved my life,” he said.

His mission is to empower those who suffer from mental illness of any form, and to educate the people who are affected by it.

Jason’s story seeks to replace despair with hope, bondage with liberation.

He proves that, with some lifestyle adjustments, the mentally ill can lead normal lives.
