Product Description

Book Description

This book is a celebration of Hastings and St Leonards, one of Britain's best known seaside resorts, and the many fascinating aspects of its heritage, townscapes, people, cultural life, and colourful annual events. From bikes to boat races and beach art to bonfires, Hastings Today captures the character of this idiosyncratic seaside town in over 250 stunning images by 20 local photographers.

From the Publisher

Hastings if a very special place with a thriving artistic and cultural community as well as a fantastic martime heritage in the shape of its fishing beach, The Stade, which has been in use for centuries. But poor transport links means that the town has often been passed over in terms of development, and unfortunately it has acquired a lot of negative publicity as a rather seedy, run-down sort of place. Those of us who live here know that this is not the case at all, and we're delighted with the response our book has had locally (over 1,500 copies sold in the first 3 months of publication) because it has given residents a reason to feel cheerful about their home town and has hit the nail on the head in accurately reflecting all that is best about Hastings and St Leonards, from the thriving lvie music scene to our fabulous architectural heritage and much more besides.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pictorial overview, 24 April 2002
By A Customer
The photography on offer is superb depicting a vibrant community.
The book itself offers the reader insight into a bustling seaside town renowned for its 1066 history.

This book portays a colourful pictorial cross-section of Hastings as it lives and breathes.
A sensuous blend of music, art, local events, faces, across generations

Every picture tells a story of a community today.
Some more in depth knowledge would not go amiss.
a few words from the individuals portrayed, their life, their times would have been an added bonus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious Hastings, 9 April 2002
By A Customer
A brillantly produced book about a town that has all too frequently been slagged off by the national press for all manner of supposed evils. The book captures the wonderful, whimsical and quirky nature of this fast-changing seaside town. There is much more to Hastings than ancient monuments and fish and chips (though both are of the highest quality here!) and this book captures the genuine flavour of the town. If you want something to remember this charming town by, or are simply interested in a book filled with excellent photographs, illustrations and copy, than I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich visual pickings on an underrated English town, 8 April 2002
By A Customer
This book propels you into the heart of an English seaside town that has been long underrated in comparison to its bigger neighbour, Brighton. A dynamic lay-out & fascinating text help bring it all alive - showing that tradition & the 21st century can happily mix. Fish & chips move on.
