4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and informative, 20 Oct 2008
By C. E. Cartwright (Leicester, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great introduction into the subject of surviving wartime structures in the East Midlands. This 165 page book is full of photographs and illustrations of surviving examples that date from the First World War, through to the Cold War.

This is a very useful book for those not familiar to the region, wishing to track down and see such sites, and an invaluable tool for helping to preserve what remains. The author has tackled each category of defence structure in chapters; Airfields, Coastal Defences, Defence Lines, etc... and sets a brief historical context for each chapter. I found the chapters on the Cold War structures most intriguing.

This book covers a vast spectrum of structures over a wide area, and as a result of it's size, would appear to have suffered with details and depth in parts, and some sites tend to be missed altogether (e.g. RAF Blaby Wharf, Leicester. The 65 Maintenance Unit's Blister hanger). There are some mistakes in location identities, too. (e.g. Mowsley is in Leicestershire, not Rutland). There's unfortunately many typo mistakes and typesetting errors.

I felt that this book was slightly rushed, and may have played second fiddle to the author's forthcoming title, the following year. The reproduction of various diagrams and photographs also left a lot to be desired. For example, some illustrations had text cut off round the edges. However, it was an interesting read and will be a useful tool for the enthusiast in this subject area. I must also add it is an ideal size for the car glove box!

Overall, a good read, and a useful guide for anyone interested in the wartime structures in these counties.

A first class overall study of the subject, wide ranging and well illustrated. Very useful for anyone who wants an introduction before starting to explore deeper themselves. Strongly recommended.
