Product Description

Product Description

Power, Corruption and Pies 2 collects the best articles to have appeared in the independent football magazine When Saturday Comes between 1997 and 2006. It was an era when the football bandwagon became a juggernaut, apparently with no one at the wheel. In spite of rampant commercialisation, the game none the less retained its appeal, even among those for whom almost every season is a sequence of disappointments. This new WSC anthology reflects the big issues of the era, from the rise of the Champions League to the disappearance of old grounds, and offers heartfelt opinions on everything from the heyday of football boardgames to the calamitous decline of the FA Cup and Delia Smith's unusual half-time announcements. Throughout its existence WSC has provided a platform for innovative football writing. Widely known authors such as David Conn, Dave Hill and long-standing contributor Harry Pearson all feature in this book. Most of all, WSC gives space to the view of those who know football best: the supporters.

4.0 out of 5 stars When Saturday Comes hits the target!, 10 Aug 2009

(REAL NAME)
Power, Corruption and Pies collects the best articles to have appeared in When Saturday Comes between 1997 and 2006 and reading this book makes you realise how much, and yet how little, has changed and also how quickly things can change too.

For example, Jon Spurling in 2006 lamented the fact that top clubs had not taken the FA Cup seriously for years. No they haven't Jon, but they still keep effortlessly winning the damn thing. Chris Taylor, also in 2006, moaned that Alex Ferguson was incapable of putting together a team fit to challenge for Premiership and European honours. So let's see, that's only 3 titles and 1 Champions League win since that article was written!

The articles represent the intelligent and thoughtful fare you would expect from WSC, although a couple slip into geek ridden nostalgia. Some of the better articles include a great piece by Simon Inglis on Archibald Leitch the engineer who designed so many football grounds; a few dedicated to FIFA and UEFA and their devilish shenanigans; plus an intriguing article from Roger Titford about how the matchday experience has changed.

Some of the humorous articles include musings on fanzines and old board games tracked down on eBay, plus a hilarious review of MTV's "Footballer's Cribs" by Helen Duff. As WSC is not all about `the Prem' there are some great features on the lower divisions such as the football rivalry in Devon, the dedicated fans who produce superb websites covering the non-league game and so on.

The business side of football, standing at games, the G-14, the rise in status of the Conference, the Pools Panel, football violence in Eastern Europe, tributes to Brian Clough and Stanley Matthews, the role of agents and sponsors. Yes, it's all here, and more!

I have a couple of criticisms of the book. Firstly, there seem to be at least half a dozen articles covering both the `Phoenix League', whereby Rangers and Celtic would join a number of teams from the Championship to form a Premiership Two; and the notion of the `North Atlantic League' whereby the top teams from Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Portugal etc. would form a breakaway league.

Secondly, at nearly 350 pages the book is too long and 280-300 pages would have been a more manageable size. I was struggling to get through it by the end.

Overall though a marvellous read and a great reminder of how good the writing in WSC is and how consistent the quality has been over the years. Go on, treat yourself!
