4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book on life in a small village., 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Subpostmasters and shopkeepers needing reassurance about the universality of your experience, this is the book for you. "Shelf Life" gets behind the scenes of a small shop and into the minds of village shopkeepers. It exposes the bureaucratic nightmare faced by small businesses and treats with humorous affection the wealth of characters and incidents that twelve years in a village post office exposes you to. Stuart Russell writes in a humorous and self-deprecating style a little reminiscent of Bill Bryson and the writing is beautifully illustrated by the line drawings of his accomplished wife. All-in-all a wonderfully instructive and entertaining read and a perfect Christmas present...

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for village shop owners/managers, 14 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Anyone running, or contemplating running a village shop needs this book. It's full of vital information; as well as being very funny.

Everyone involved comes under close scrutiny: bureaucrats, suppliers, customers and (most interestingly) the people who want a village shop, but don't use it.

Read it, enjoy it and realise that anyone craxy enough to run a village shop deserves a medal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reality Bites..., 30 Oct 2006
By Bo Rooster (Poulton, Gloucestershire) - See all my reviews
Having purchased both Mr Russell's book and business, about which he writes, I feel singularly best qualified to express my opinion. He certainly is a talented and amusing writer, comparable certainly to many of our best humorous writers such as Giles Brandreth, Gervais Phinn and Jeremy Clarkson. However, I would not wish for readers to uncritically accept the very high regard which Mr Russell clearly has of himself as a businessman. The reality was very different to the hilarous, but rose-tinted, view expressed in the book. When I took over his Village Store, although admittedly award-winning, the business was on its last legs. Mr Russell's avuncular and pleasant manner betrayed a lack of necessary efficiency and discipline, which I did not hesitate to implement with immediate effect. I'm sure if you asked the villagers, they would undoubtably describe a stark contrast between my approach and that of Mr Russell. My advice would be to read this book with "a pinch of salt". I also suspect that Mr Russell has written the other reviews of this book himself, admittedly using the ingenious nom-de-plume of "A Reader".
