3.0 out of 5 stars A sad story, 22 Jul 2004
By ILONACAT (WIRRAL, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I was pleased to hear there was a biography of Duncan Edwards available. His promising career and his tragic death from injuries received in the Munich air crash have become the stuff of legend. The authors of this book clearly spoke to a lot of people who had known Edwards at various stages of his life. Unfortunately, the writing is rather bland and two-dimensional. Of course the focus would be on football, but the endless blow-by-blow accounts of various matches became a bit tedious. I'd have liked to read more about his relationship with his parents, for example, and with Molly Leech, his fiancee. Perhaps this information was hard to come by. What I did enjoy in the book is the array of photographs. They capture another age, when footballers were a part of the community. This book is worth getting if you're interested in Edwards and the Busby Babes, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the video narrated by Nick Owen-that is a very moving experience, with rare footage of Edwards in the happy times.May he rest in peace.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Light that Never Went Out, 17 Oct 2004
By Mr. P. J. Cooper - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a great book, which is the closest to revealing exactly how good a footballer Duncan was.
Every first team United game he played is listed with a few brief details about the match, some including Duncan's progress. We see that he did have the occasional 'stinker', such as a game against Everton where he conceded a penalty and scored an own goal. These were outnumbered by many herculean performances described by the author.
Iain McCartney is a good writer of several United books (Irish Reds; Tartan Reds) and his knowledge is excellent, though I would have liked the reports to be a little more in depth with line ups and every goalscorer named, but there was probably limited space.
The book is highly recommended to all Manchester United supporters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Duncan Edwards - the full report, 4 April 2009
By Dga Bowyer (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Duncan Edwards is my sporting hero and died tragically young like so many of his team mates 51 years ago. This book chronicles his rise to the first team at Man Utd and charts the matches that he took part it, providing information on his performances good or bad. It has added to my knowledge of him and football in the 1950's. However what I really want to buy is Iain McCartney's book on Duncan himself which although I believe was published not that many years ago, is sadly out of print and therefore is difficult to find!
