Product Description

Book Description

This book, the first in-depth study of milestones in England, focuses on a rapidly disappearing and forgotten part of our heritage. The word milestone today is usually taken to mean a significant event rather than a stone beside the road marking distances. For several centuries milestones were almost the only items of street furniture. Apart from letting travellers know how far they had to go, they were used to time mailcoaches and walking races, work out the cost of postage and of hiring horses. Milestones were erected first during the Roman era and later were provided by turnpike trusts, public subscription, landed gentry and local authorities. They acted as advertisements for iron foundries and status symbols for the estate owner and they doubled as boundary markers, water pumps, memorials and mounting blocks.

Over 400 milestones are described, with examples taken from most of the English counties. Information on the design of milestones, historical details, together with some of the interesting stories behind them are included, making the book of value to local historians, industrial archaeologists and observant travellers.

From the Author

Boredom on long road journeys directed my attention and curiosity to milestones, and the difficulty of finding information on their history provided the impetus for this book. I started by hunting down the remaining milestones in my own county of Norfolk (approximately 350 were found) and having published details on these in the Journal of the Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society, then decided to widen my studies to cover in a more general manner the milestones of England. Because nothing had previously been written in detail on this subject, a great deal of research was required. During this process, I discovered that other people, independently, were also alarmed at the rapid disappearance of milestones and were keen to be involved in recording their occurrence and to investigate means for their preservation. This concern culminated in the formation (October 2000) of the Milestone Society at a meeting of interested parties at the Black Country Museum in Dudley, at which meeting my book was launched.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for English roadside milestones, 4 Oct 2001

If you are interested in the history of Engish milestones as roadside furniture, or the presevatation of milestones then this is the book for you ! Essential reading for members and prospective members of the Milestone Society, the book is easy reading, but gives a good general background knowledge of the subject of the history and variety of styles of Engish milestones, including illustrations and photographs. A facinating insight into both local and national history which is closer to your home than you may think !
