5.0 out of 5 stars Experiential learning in book form, 1 Jul 2002
By A Customer
Trevor Bentley's book on Facilitation is a wonderful source of learning. This is partly because of what the author shares of his experiences as a facilitator, and partly because of the way in which he does so. The book is structured around a case study of a facilitation skills workshop that he facilitated, which he describes with such clarity that as I read the book I felt like I was part of the workshop and that I cared about what was happening for the participants. The combination of explaining what he did and why (and what other techniques might or might not work), and the ways in which he modelled his own values through what he did, is a powerful one and made my learning seem experiential.

Throughout the book the author demonstrates that it is the other person's process that he is facilitating, that anything might happen - and frequently does - and how good contact can enable individuals and groups to grow and develop. His belief in the unique worth and potential of each individual is obvious through the ways in which he both approaches his task and describes what happens with almost palpable warmth, honesty and openness. There are many gems in the book, some of which made me laugh and some of which moved me to tears. The latter were those times when participants in the workshop were enabled through skilled facilitation to achieve things for themselves that they would never have believed were possible and the times where they enabled each other to achieve through giving each other their full support. The book is a remarkable testimony to the ability of individuals to achieve things for themselves and to take control of and responsibility for their own efforts and achievements.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gets to the spirit of facilitation, 29 April 2001
By A Customer
This is a great book. Most "instruction" books deal at a "mind" level. This one does more than that. By taking you through a workshop you also get to try out the emotions involved in facilitation - in particular letting go of content and working purely in process. I don't know of any other book that conveys the spirit of facilitation as well as this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable introduction to non-directive facilitation, 28 Feb 2001
By A Customer
This highly accessible book introduces group faciliation for a non-directive perspective. It weaves discussion of group dynamics/ facilitaion theory with a real life illustration, This really helped to bring the concepts to life. If you want something more than 'tools and techniques' this is well worth a read
