5.0 out of 5 stars Swinging Through the Sky: Poems for Children by Kate Williams, 7 May 2007
By Geraldine ALLEN-MANSON (Cardiff, Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a brilliant, life-enriching book! Kate Williams has the uncanny ability to capture the world of children of primary school age and articulate what many might want to if they had the words and skill to express their ideas poetically. But this book is not just for children! It is also a great means by which adults can recapture and get back in touch with their half-forgotten childhood selves - it is a world of fantasy, fun and magic, brimming over with colourful images, aided by the many simple but effective illustrations. A wide range of topics is explored, linked thematically in a rough sequence through the book - from the sea, treasure, pirates, monsters, giants, spooky things, outer space, the sky, storms, weather, the seasons, butterflies and other insects, pets and wild animals - to everyday life at home and at school, and lots of amusing stories, ideas and interesting things - real and imaginary - anywhere and everywhere!
Swinging Through the Sky, with its immediate impact and down-to-earth style (as well as being up-in-the-sky) will, without doubt, stimulate children (and adults too) whether or not they have already acquired any interest in poetry, because the book is just so enjoyable! It may well inspire its readers to try writing some poems of their own - or, for those of us who are already enthusiasts, more of our own. More Please!
