This book is packed with ideas about how the world will become in the near future. It is something of a companion piece to Naomi Klein's 'No Logo' and George Monbiot's 'The Captive State' . Rich in detail and black humour it taps into the philosophy of the late American comic Bill Hicks. Brilliant. But difficult to get hold of.

This is a highly imaginative and engrossing read with a multitude of ideasflying around its richly textured narrative. A future dystopian society ispresented to us here as an extension of our own world, albeit one warpedby paranoia and consumerism. A revolution is needed, but the man behind itis hung up on the latest street drug. From there, Outhwaite shoots off attangents, making the grotesque discernable through his bleak, blacklycomic attention to detail. There's no slacking on the left wing polemiceither, but that's only half the story because Outhwaite satirises theleft as much as the right, concluding, as stand-up comedian Bill Hickswould have it, that all governments are liars (Hicks's philosophypermeates the book). Undoubtedly Orwellian, but as eccentric as Calvino. Aripping yarn.
