Product Description
As we reach the third millennium, this book provides a journey through time: a guide to the history of Christianity as told by the worlds of art, monuments and churches of Rome. The art and architecture of the Eternal City have stories to tell, drawn from the past two thousand years, about how and why they were created. More than just another travel guide, this comprehensive volume includes suggested walking tours around Rome so you don't miss any of the important monuments or churches. Features a complete history and description of the city, its monuments and tells the story of Christianity from 753 BC when the city was founded by Romulus and Remus. Perfect not only for tourists, but also historians, people interested in religion, art and architecture.

Visit Rome ¿ if only in your imagination - press review
A beautiful little book on the most marvellous of cities. Rome, A Guide to the Eternal City is much more than just a guide book, it is also a narrative which tells the story of Christianity through the monuments and churches of Rome. Beautifully descriptive writing, backed up with numerous illustrations and full-colour photographs. Very helpful if you are visiting Rome, and very tantalising if you are not able to visit Rome! by Robert Llewelyn

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally different and beguiling history and guide to Rome., 27 April 2000
By A Customer
This beautiful book guides you to all the parts of Rome - including many that aren't on the 'tourist trail' - that comprise its real history. The walks are manageable and fascinating and look at every aspect of the history of this wonderful city. You will want to book a return trip as you pass through the airport if you haven't had time to complete the whole book. Highly recommended and the most comprehensive guide I have ever had to the history and sights of any city. I only hope that these authors have other guides in the pipeline: they will be worth planning holidays around. As a publisher, I wish my company had issued this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for a different perspective on Rome, 25 April 2000
By A Customer
Finally, a guide book which tells the stories behind the scenes; a rich collection of legends, anecdotes and facts which unveils a new Rome, a city built by remarkable people. Visiting Rome with this book in my hand has been a whole new experience. I felt I was walking through time, century by century. This is a fantastic little book, full of information and fact, a mine of knowledge. While visiting the Catacomb of San Lorenzo and admiring the statue of Saint Cecilia with my group, our tour guide bet us a pint of beer that none of us could tell him of whom she is the patron saint. A quick look at Rome, A Guide to the Eternal City and the pint was mine! I highly recommend it.
