Product Description

From the Inside Flap

WALKING BRITTANY discovers the most attractive and often little-known parts of this beautiful holiday region.
28 walks are described in detail with maps and photographs, with suggestions for over a hundred more – enough to create your own self-styled walking holiday based on the location of your choice.
Amble through the beech forest at Fougères or follow in the footsteps of Gauguin at Pont-Aven. Enjoy a family outing to the wonders of the Pink Granite Coast or the strange rock formations at Huelgoat. Off-the-beaten-track, explore the megaliths of St-Just or investigate the legends of King Arthur in the Forest of Paimpont. For an energetic hike, try Ménez-Hom or Ménez-Mikel, the ‘mountains’ of Brittany.

‘Walking Brittany’ was first published as ‘Holiday Walks in Brittany’ by Sigma Press in 2001. This extensively reworked edition is published by Red Dog Books in July 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars Great walking in Brittany, 5 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Walking Brittany (Red Dog Guides) (Paperback)
Judy Smith's book is much more than a collection of walks: it is also full of interesting and enticing information about the history, landscape and culture of Brittany, the Celtic heartland of France. As a resident of Brittany, I have used the book with pleasure, enjoying walks in stunning scenery and gaining a greater understanding of my environment in the process. The directions and sketch maps are full and accurate, with details of all the sights on route, both natural and man-made. In addition to the main walks - which cover all four departments of Brittany - there are suggestions for dozens of others in the same areas. The author also provides an overview of each walk and handy summaries of practicalities (such as length, parking, level of difficulty) at the beginning. The walks themselves vary from coastal routes to the hills, lakes, rivers and deep forests of the interior. There is something to suit all levels of ability in terms of length and gradient. The book is a good read in its own right and eminently usable as a way of discovering both well-known and more secluded walking trails in an exceptional region of France.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well explained good walks some out-of-date information, 7 July 2009

Quite a good book. Easy to follow directions with good maps. But inevitably for this type of book some of the information is out-of-date. This book includes nice enjoyable walks but another book available on Amazon "Walk Brittany" (aka "Walk 'North' Brittany") contains much better walks with almost perfect directions and maps. I bought both books and while this one was quite good I left it in Brittany for others to use. Whilst keeping "Walk Brittany" all for myself for future years of fantastic walking. The Brittany coast and inland walks are well worth searching out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brittany step by step, 20 July 2009

We love Brittany so much we bought a cottage and a gite! "Walking in Brittany" is a brilliant guide to delightful routes. Keen walkers and those who simply stroll will find lovely walks to explore. The maps and detailed notes are enthralling. This is a book to read by the fireside in winter and to pack into a pocket on the first day outdoors. Brittany is beautiful, historic and cultural and all of these qualities are explored in the variety of walks.
The book includes a brief guide to the Breton language and a really useful French vocabulary for walkers. We will buy another copy to leave in the gite for our guests.
