Product Description

Pulped, Aug-Sept 1999, issue 9

The so-called English Disease has as long a history in Scotland, only it is not as well documented. The money men who are seeking to re-write football history will hate it, but in Bring Out Your Riot Gear - Hearts Are Here!, C.S. Ferguson tells it as it was when Hearts had one of the most feared followings north of the border . . . definitely up there with the best of the recent crop of hooligan books

Book Description

One of the few books to document football hooliganism in Scotland, welcome to the world of Gorgie Aggro!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading for anyone researching Scottish youth culture., 16 Sep 1999
By A Customer
This book is a fantastic, detailed encounter of a young gang mod who followed Hearts football club during the early eighties who eventually became one of the first recruits into the much feared CSF (Casual Soccer Firm). The Author describes the dreadful scenes of violence instigated by the CSF in great detail, but also gives great insight into the cultural changes from the revitalised gangs of mods who later became known as the casuals. An excellent read for anyone who is researching cultural changes in Scotland during the early eighties and also a cracking read for any football fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative on all aspects of Scottish Youth Culture, 1 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I am a Sociology student at Kingston Uni, and I found this book enjoyable and informative. It is more than just another book on football violence, and is in fact an easy to read account of Scottish Youth Culture in the early 80's.

The book also provides an insight into the mind of a male from a working class background, and it is interesting to see how important it is for them to have a sense of belonging. The erosion of this old-style gang culture may ironically lead to a greater disregard for old style standards, which I feel shows in the current decline of our social fabric in the UK at the moment.

I'm sure that the author never intended for his book to be analysed by a student, however the fact that he has been able to appeal to the hooligan market and also to the academic market proves what a well written book this is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb read from start to finish, 30 Oct 1999
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite being an ex Dundee hooly. I must admit it I bought it expecting it to be the same old.."we done evryone" crap..(ie like Jay Allans Bloody Casuals), but was surprised to see that the guy actually tells the truth. The incidents with Dundee and Dundee U are spot on.
