Product Description

Nicholas Royle

"Dirty realism just got dirtier and more real. John Dalton’s debut grips you around the throat from the start and doesn’t let go. It’s like Derek Raymond lost his way at Hanger Lane and ended up, via the M40, in Birmingham."

Raw Edge, Spring/Summer, 2002

Written with feeling...panache and a genuine love of the genre...The action zips along...a bloody good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Midlands Gumshoe, 4 Sep 2002
John Dalton is a real find for those who like gritty crime novels with touches of cynical humour. He takes the conventions of the "flawed gumshoe" thriller and gives it fresh twists with a page turner of a plot, some memorable characters and a private eye who engages our sympathy. Chandler`s "mean streets" usually
appear in New York or L.A. but here Birmingham is just as corrupt and sleazy and John Dalton`s work is on a par with some of the best American writers in the crime noir genre. I look
forward to reading what his private eye will get up to next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Putting Birmingham Firmly on the Noir Map, 25 Jun 2002
By Zulfiqar Ali (Birmingham, England) - See all my reviews
Dope-fiends, pub-crawls, blues parties, a murdered prostitute, the fall guy lover, the grieving mother, the corrupt right-wing politician, and, among a cast of desperatos of various shades, the PI struggling to make sense of a senseless world. This is John Dalton's THE CITY TRAP, a rock-steady thriller debut that's as cocksure as a prostitute's cynicism. Dalton delves into the dark heart of Birmingham (More Canals than Venice!) with the instincts and tenacity of a blood hound, exposing the rot infesting the Second City. Enter his world at your own peril. You've been warned.
