Product Description

Synopsis
The term "third way" has become common usage in New Labour circles. In this booklet, Patrick Harrington asks whether the third way really is just a revised form of social democracy. He questions whether we can address the problem of social exclusion without a radical restructuring of our economy and institutions. This booklet goes beyond the soundbites to examine the issues raised.

From Chapter 1: "In determining whether a government is following a Third Way, we need only ask two questions. First, are their policies leading to the ownership of property and wealth being spread more widely in the population (which of course would imply a redistribution of wealth)? Second, are their policies encouraging a more active citizenship and devolving decisions to the lowest possible level. If the answer to either question is no, then claims of pursuing a Third Way are not genuine."

5.0 out of 5 stars Rehashed social democracy is a bogus Third Way., 9 Feb 2000
By A Customer
The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, describes his rehashed version of social democracy as the 'Third Way'. The author of this pamphlet, Patrick Harrington, is a member of a small British political party - formed in 1990 - that also calls itself 'Third Way'. Harrington asks if Blair's version of the Third Way leads to a wider distribution of wealth and property among citizens. He also asks if the Blair version encourages citizenship that is more active and the devolution of political decisions to the lowest possible levels. If not, Blair's claim and that of his guru Anthony Giddens to espouse a genuine third way is bogus.

Harrington examines the claims of Blair and Giddens and finds that they have nothing new to offer. Blair's 'third way' will not empower the ordinary citizen but will create a 'politically correct' super-nanny state where Tony knows what's good for everyone. In a small pamphlet, Harrington manages to expose the contradictions at the heart of Tony Blair's pseudo-third way in which the Left become the servants of globalised capitalism.

4.0 out of 5 stars Demolition job, 25 April 2000
By A Customer
I read this book a few weeks back and was astonished at what an effective demolition job it was on the "third way" advocated by Blair and Clinton. I had never heard of Harrington before or his rival third way.

This book gets right down to business asking how should we divide up power and wealth in our modern societies? It cuts through the baloney and the bluster.

I also liked the fact that the writer had no time for the kind of neo-colonialism favoured by Blair and Clinton and recently rightly condemned by Nelson Mandela. These overseas adventures he rightly condemned.
