Product Description

Book Description
The author describes briefly his early days in Lanarkshire and holidays with relatives near Cleish before war disrupts his studies. Shot down and injured while on a bombing mission on steelworks near Strassburg, he is eventually arrested and taken to the first of many POW camps: Dulag Luft. Compelled to escape Nazi POW camps by his longing for freedom and the Scottish moors, his story focuses on planning escapes, short-lived bouts of freedom and inevitable recapture, solitary confinement, thirst, hunger, brutality and occasional encounters with kindness. Finally caught up in the chaos and the destruction of the last months of the war, common sense prevails and for once he does not try to escape but awaits the arrival of the Americans and the hand-over of prisoners by the Russians at the River Elbe.

Andrew Winton’s fast-moving account would suit both adult and teenage readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A remarkable story by a modest man, 8 Sep 2004
By D. Flanagan "flandan" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was a pupil at Trinity Academy in the early eighties, when Andrew Winton was deputy rector. As a bunch of 14-year-old yobbos, none of us had any appreciation of just what our deputy rector had been through. Indeed, as rather ignorant teenagers, it wasn't considered cool to show any interest in the "war stories" we understood Mr Winton would occasionally share with pupils. It wasn't until he had the misfortune of taking charge of our class one morning after we had despatched a poor student maths teacher that we started to get some insight into this modest man's remarkable past. Rather than attempt to teach us maths, Mr Winton took us on a journey through a variety of subjects - everything from the Scottish mountains to Nazi Germany. We sat transfixed as he told us about his escape from a POW camp, why he wore a golden caterpillar badge, and so on. It was probably the first time we'd all shut up for more than five minutes. Afterwards, of course, we all pretended to have been bored but I never forgot what he'd told us and I suspect I wasn't alone. Thinking about him recently I ran a search on the internet and found out about his book. Saddened to read he had died, I ordered Open Road to Faraway and I couldn't put it down. It's beautifully written and absolutely gripping. I felt a tremendous guilt when reading it though, guilt on behalf of an entire year of young fools who showed precious little respect to a decent, brave and kind man. Not only should his former pupils read this, everyone should. It's a fine testament to his memory.
