Product Description

Book Description

The Lion of Scotland and the Eagle of Poland, two powerful symbols of nationhood, were bound together by fate during the Second World War. In 1939, Germany, and then the Soviet Union, invaded and crushed Poland. In the ensuing chaos, a few Poles embarked upon a miraculous and hazardous journey of escape. After great hardships, some of these men, women and children managed to reach Britain to fight again. With little knowledge of the language and few possessions, they were sent to live in tents and to build coastal defences in a strange, cold and wet land in the North: Scotland. Unable to return to Poland after the war, they gladly stayed in their adopted country and formed the basis of today’s vibrant Polish-Scottish community. The Lion and the Eagle is a collection of some of the unique stories of the few surviving founders of the wartime Polish Community in Scotland. They are stories of war, of courage and of pride.

About the Author

Dr Diana Henderson ( Editor) has lived and worked in Edinburgh for twenty years. After graduating in Law, she studied Scottish Military History at Edinburgh University and in 1995 she was appointed as Research Director of the Scots at War Trust. She served in the Territorial Army for thirty-three years and was one of the first women to command a regiment of The Royal Logistic Corps. Since the 1960s, Diana has specialised in in-depth interviews and conversations with the dwindling number of vulnerable and ageing war veterans who have unique stories to tell. The proceedings of the Polish Seminar which gave rise to this book are typical of her tireless work to record and acknowledge their courage, endurance and survival against the odds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A polissh scot!!, 18 Jul 2002
I purchased this book for my grandad who was born in poland and came to scotland during world war two. This book seemed to be written exactly for him in that the content is full of stories of bravery and sacrifice. The stories within the book are very moving and I feel that after having read it I can understand the sacrifices my grandfather made. The book has good sized text and a few pictures to set the tone for the different stories. I loved this book and have read it a few times. As i said before it was purchased for my grandad but he has not yet been allowed to read it.....Soon though.
