4.0 out of 5 stars A stunning visual portrait of Britain's last 'wilderness'., 7 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Despite the numerous designations of 'National Park', 'National Scenic Area', 'Area of Outstanding National Beauty' and various other 'labels' given to semi-wild and beautiful landscapes around the British Isles, it is perhaps only in the Cairngorm mountains of the Scottish Highlands that one can truly glimpse an untamed landscape that is virtually unchanged since the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Having lived and worked in the Cairngorms as a ranger for the National Trust for Scotland, I have experienced the grandeur and beauty of these mountains and the flora and fauna at first hand. This book by Stuart Rae and Adam Watson, a notable Cairngorms expert, is excellent in it's use of stunning colour photography to convey the beauty and ruggedness of the mountains in many different moods. The text is sparse, yet it is the photography that gives one an insight into this fascinating part of Britain. The scale of the mountains, the vast skies and the contrast between the seasons is wonderfully illustrated. There are excellent photographs of the wildlife and flora of the area and the added notes are informative and well written. For anyone who loves the natural world, or who wants a reminder of time spent in this wild landscape or maybe wants some inspiration to escape from 'overcrowded Britain' for a while, this book is an excellent purchase.
