Product Description

Scottish Home & Country, July 1999

The book is compulsive reading and sometimes I wanted to shout "grow up and don't be so naive - stick with what you've been successful with!" But they had so many animals they just couldn't concentrate on success, and kept failing. Don't let that put you off. Graham Irwin's story is definitely worth reading.

Smallholder, May 1999

The author does not skimp on honesty when he describes getting the farm ready and how different the work is from an office based environment. ... The book is filled with many amusing moments and a few home truths about the farm. I think the chapter about Fudgie developing BSE is one of the sadest. I feel this book is well worth reading. This is a book for all smallholders both would-be and those already 'living their dreams'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed, 6 Aug 1999
By A Customer
A Farm of Our Own arrived on my doormat one dull rainy day during the Christmas break. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting and loved every minute. Graham's enticing blend of candour and humour invites you to be a fly on the wall but the warmth with which it is written makes you feel more akin to a fly in a comfortable old armchair! His writing illustrates that The Good Life is not always the idyllic retreat that most of us imagine but, like any other experience, holds its fair share of joy and sadness, laughter and tears. Nonetheless, an experience I am sure he would not have missed and likewise A Farm of Our Own is unquestionably a read not to be missed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Its doesent do what it sez on the tin............, 25 Jul 2003

I dispute this book is worth reading at all. All the other reviewers wax lyrically about what a terrific leap of faith these guys made into the world of self subsistence. It's even written into the preface - 'One man's courage' and all. Yet within the first few pages you come to discover that our 'Tom' character of the 'Good Life' is holding down a full time job with a company car! He's far more a 'Jerry' with a ponchant for gardening than a 'Tom' who really did give it all up. Even his partner Rosemarie has a full time job! How could this possibly be sold as the 'Good life'.
Take my advice and do yourselves a favour, read the story for real, buy yourself a copy of 'Walden' and truly tread the spiritual trail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stimulating, 23 Aug 1999
By A Customer
I enjoyed immensely taking a 'peek through the keyhole to see how the other half lives,' as Graham Irwin invites us to do in his preface. The detail of the high and low points in a real life 'good life' were fascinating to read - it gave me plenty to think about at the end.
