5.0 out of 5 stars Step aside Hammer, here comes Amicus, 26 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Long a fan of Hammer Horror, it was interesting to see a rival studio be set up and utilise the same actors and directors and produce the same sort of films. Amicus was that studio and despite not reaching the heights of success that Hammer had, Amicus still left its mark on British horror.

This book, although a bit price compared to the Hammer equivalent, is an excellent film-by-film look at Amicus. There are loads of photos, behind the scenes information, film synopses, reviews and much more. It's the perfect way to read up on the history of this studio and learn more about how it was ran.

Right from it's early origins in rock and roll films, to it's horror output of the 60s and 70s, to the Dr Who films and then the dinosaur/fantasy flicks of the late 70s - this has got everything you wanted to know about every Amicus film. It's pretty biased at times but still an excellent read and nice to see that a lesser known part of British film history is given it's fair share of the limelight at last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!, 31 Jul 2001
... being stuck for information on this British film production company I decided to buy, expecting that if I was to find the information I needed Amicus-The studio that dripped blood was the only available book on the subject and it was either this book or no book. What I didn`t expect was the range of information which was very in depth and a whole gallery of pictures from their films, it covers the films they made even before Amicus was formed starting with a few rock n roll films from the fifties through the Dr who films of the early 60`s and the anthology of short horror stories films ie Tales from the crypt, From beyond the grave etc..from the 60`s and 70`s to the crazy dinosaur films they did towards the end of the 70`s which was to bring them to financial ruin..All in all this book which is very well written and illustrated provided me with a lot more than the info I required and basically is worth every penny......

5.0 out of 5 stars Amicus "the other horror studio", 26 Sep 2004

(REAL NAME)
During the 1960's and early 1970's there was another studio vying for the attention of the british cinema going public into all things horror. This company produced some of the best films not to come out of Hammer studios including Dr Terrors House of Horrors,Tales from the Crypt,From Beyond the Grave, the two Dr Who features starring Peter Cushing and many others.

This well illustrated book tells the story of the sometimes stormy relationship between the two owners Milton Subotsky and Max J.Rosenberg.This company went onto rival Hammer in it's output of classy horror and science fiction films with some of the best actors and crew from the uk including a great many connected with Hammer.

Each film is looked at with a history of its production and release and with interviews from such people as directors Roy Ward Baker & Freddie Francis, actors such as Caroline Munroe and Susan Penhaligan and comments from Max J.Rosenberg.

This book is well worth buying if you are at all interested in the history of british horror or only thought Hammer ever made horror films in this country.Im sure you will be surprised to see some films that you thought were made by Hammer turn out to be made by Amicus instead.Recommended
