Brilliant properties you will want to stay in, 5 Nov 2005
The Landmark Trust raises funds to restore historic buildings. Once restored, the buildings are available for holidays, all year around, on a self catering basis. There are 183 Landmarks throughout Britain and the Channel Islands, including 23 on Lundy Island, four in Italy and four in the USA, with more properties being added each year. They include forts, manor houses, mills, cottages, castles, gatehouses, follies and towers. The properties are listed alphabetically by name, with a summary map at the front and an index at the end. The handbook provides details of each of these properties, typically one property per page, with photographs (now colour in this latest edition of the handbook), short description and floor layout. The floor layout is particularly useful as you can see the exact combination of single, twin and double rooms with toilets, kitchens and bathrooms etc. Other details given indicate if pets are welcome, availability of parking etc. Each property has a log book for guests to share their thoughts and experiences and some selected highlights are included in the handbook. The Trust produces an updated handbook periodically but can supply supplement sheets for new properties so that it is not necessary to buy a new handbook each year. Booking is done directly with the Trust, a current availability and prices list can be obtained from their web site For anyone keen to stay in of these beautiful historic properties this handbook is the starting point for selecting a suitable property to stay in. For more detailed information and photographs there are a variety of websites such as www.astbury.org to assist further.
