Product Description

Synopsis

The embryo for Operation Konigin was not dreamt up by admirals surrounded by staff officers in some beautifully panelled room of an occupied French Chateau. Instead it began in a glorified whore-house in Lorient in a smoke filled room stinking of spilt beer, over-perfumed women and the body odour of men who knew that their lives could be very short. One of those men, the captain of a U-boat, made a drunken remark about 'Putting one up the Queen' which grew to become a ribald cartoon on the notice board in naval Headquarters in Berlin. There it caught the eye of an admiral who detailed a commander to find out what was behind it. This is the chronicle of the conception, gestation and final birth, in the distant unforgiving cold waters off Iceland, of 'Operation Konigin'. Had it succeeded it would have totally devastated the allied cause. That it did not was in no way due to bad planning or lack of physical courage.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good a read as any. Brilliant, 17 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Either Way Dead is an exciting tale of patriotism, intrigue, murder and sex, brought to life by an author who has a wonderful way of creating scenarios that make the reader feel as being part of the action. Tension and suspense are kept up throughout the book, despite copious tehnical and nautical terms. There is never a dull moment. Either Way Dead is a marvellous read from begining to end. 5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, fascinating - a story of intrigue., 2 Aug 2000

What a compelling read! A suspenseful, intriguing, fascinating story about what "could have been" - the sabotage of the Queen Mary during World War II. An adventure tale that keeps you riveted to the pages as you follow the mission of the German spy and his "job for the Fatherland".

This is a tale not to be missed. The author makes you feel you are right along on this trip and your pulse quickens as you finally reach the exciting conclusion. And as a bonus, you get a refresher course on some of authenic history of World War II,

A great book. I just couldn't put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspense, intrigue and imagination by a master storyteller, 25 Jul 2000
By A Customer
Can this truely be real? Is it a hoax? The author just seems to know too much for this story to be anything but genuine. And yet, success of the plot would have changed history...and the fate of a nation. The author provides an intimate insight into a complex character. His blend of morality and immorality are exactly what is needed for such an undertaking, and we get caught up through the whole adventure. The rememberances of the time are bittersweet and remind us why freedom and democracy must survive. The simplicity of the plan is the key to its possible success. I found this escape to another time to be quite entertaining.
