5.0 out of 5 stars The life story of a pioneer of desert exploration, 4 Jun 2003
By Mr. S. J. Watson "Sam Watson" (York or Cairo) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Those of us who drive the desert for enjoyment these days, in our air-conditioned, satellite-navigated 4x4s, owe a huge debt to Pat Clayton and his 1930s friends. British residents of Cairo, members for the most part of the government Desert Survey, he and his colleagues (numbering amongst them such names as Ralph Bagnold, Guy Prendergast and George Murray) were the first to plot and map the great Egyptian Sahara, first using Model T Fords and later on larger Chevrolet and Ford trucks. The book (written by Pat's son) contains full accounts of his pre-WW2 explorations and also his work with the Long Range Desert Group, the piratical scourge of the Italians and Nazis and the forefathers of the SAS. Its well worth a read, though to be fair you have to know the places he is writing about, or at least have a map to hand.
Desert travellers of today would be floundering (literally) without some of Clayton's pioneering work.... his Egyptian maps are still the most accurate available. Read how it all started. Thrills, spills, battle accounts and tales of exploration in equal measures, as well as a dollop of biography. Inspiring stuff... makes you wonder where your jerry cans and maps are.....
