Product Description

From the Author
A wake up call to humanity
I wrote "Uncommon Sense" as a wake-up call to humanity. Most seem to think that we must get government to sort out our big problems, but I will argue that government itself is inescapably the biggest problem on the planet. We have hundreds of them spending vast sums protecting themselves from each other - and maintaining their grip and control of those within the borders they command. More precious resources are squandered on hapless schemes, corruption, and ham-fisted efforts to shape society to a pre-conceived status quo. You needn't be confused by this apparent madness any more, or regard it as an inevitable only option.

New science "chaos theory" shows us why the coercive efforts of the state are doomed to regular failure. At the same time, it shows us how our evolving society has naturally brought about such a great, albeit threatened civilization. This science demonstrates that it is the nature of the universe, operating freely, to create order and harmony in complex systems - such as that which we call society. "Uncommon Sense" is not a learned long-winded treatise, nor a New Age ramble. It is a positive and sensible book, that most readers find thought-provoking, funny and optimistic - whilst being one of the most peacefully subversive books they had ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is imperative that you read this book!, 12 April 2006
I have read this book many times since I first became aware of its existence through a "chance" (I should say "chaotic") meeting with the author in India. That was 1997... since when I have lived under the rule several different 'states', dealt frequently with their various bureaucracies & immigration restrictions and encountered a universal belief in that nation's superiority. With each time I return to the book, therefore, it seems sharper and yet more relevant. Whether or not you come to the same conclusions as Greg Sams, you can hardly fail to acknowledge the many worsening symptoms of the societal sickness he describes.
With a background in physics & systems engineering, I am not one to be readily swayed by pseudoscience - it is refreshing, therefore, that Greg proposes the solid ground of Chaos Theory as the means to analyse the complex human relations that make up society. It is crucial to his argument that we appreciate that human beings, as part of the wider universe, do not follow Newtonian determinism but rather should be viewed as a naturally free-operating system. Sadly we are suffering from anachronistic attempts to impose order from above. In engineering, we would rarely opt for an 18th century solution to a 21st century set of problems... but in politics this is exactly what is being done the world over. This book will show you how and go a long way to explain why. It is up to you what you choose to do about it.
If I have one criticism, it is that reading this book has made it very difficult for me to bury my head in the sand and watch the mess-makers trying to steer us to a better life through taxation. Perhaps it is true that 'ignorance is bliss'... the state would certainly like us to think so!
Uncommon Sense is well written, frank and passionate without becoming vitriolic. It is an entertaining read that should make you laugh, unless you happen to be working for the Inland Revenue. I would certainly recommend buying it, mainly because it will contribute to the successful system that is the global business community.

5.0 out of 5 stars A humorous, eye-opening dissection of the modern State, 6 April 2000
By A Customer
This wonderful thought-provoking little book collects many of the annoyances and criticisms any open-minded human being has about "The State" and it's meddeling interfrence in each and every persons life. The book weaves all of these bits into a coherent theory, and without becoming preachy or tiring makes you really wonder why the hell we all put up with the whole system - Bureaucracy, taxes, military, and politicians. Not a nutty, fringe-weirdo manifesto, the book is amusing, well written and definitely a good present to give your mother-in-law or anyone else you don't mind provoking. Very Very Recommended Reading!
