4.0 out of 5 stars A grounded account, 6 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This book is a well written insight into the early foundations and development of Karate in England. If you have never met Kanazawa sensei then this is your chance to get a little closer to a great Man and a truly fantastic practitioner of Karate.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspirational read. , 5 Mar 2008
By R. Welch "rwelch34" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An illuminating account of Karate development in 1960's seen through the eyes of a pivotal member of that movement. Sensei Randall's account consists of a fascinating series of anecdotes from an exciting period when interest in Karate was just taking hold and it seemed that anything could happen.

I was impressed not just by Layton's ability to record the different and often much harsher, attitudes of that era, but also that the book captures the youthful and often infectious enthusiasm that students had for learning - something that is often missing today. It's not just a factual account, it really captures the essence of what Kanazawa Sensei and his countrymen brought to Britain at that time and how much it meant to those who were involved.

Because of this, I find myself drawn back to the book again and again for inspiration. In fact, the only problem with this book is that I didn't want it to end and felt that reluctant frustration to finish the last pages. A rare feeling, but always associated with a good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, inspiring. Real karate in a fake karate world, 13 Jul 2000
This book is the first karate book that I have read in the last 15 years that actually taught me something useful. Most of the time books are writen and published by amatures who want to make themselves famous. This book was writen by a man who knows and loves his karate
