Product Description

Product Description

Football, as they say, is a funny old game. It's certainly been a side-splitting period at Upton Park since West Ham were promoted to the Premiership in 1993. This is the story of the club's transformation from their intial struggle to survive to their signing of world class players.

5.0 out of 5 stars A corker!, 1 Mar 2002
By A Customer
I don't know much about football or West Ham; I bought this book as a present for my nephew but couldn't help dipping into it. Banks is witty but cynical, scathing but passionate about his side. Interesting for footie fans. A pre-requisite for Hammers' addicts. Read it 'n' weep!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling, 25 Feb 2001
By A Customer
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but as a lifelong hammers' fan I took a chance, and boy am I glad. Banks offers a brilliant insight into the often illogical world of the football supporter, detailing the ups and frequent downs of following the boys in claret and blue. Most interesting however, are the hints at what happens in Banks' life outside, or should I say, alongside, football. Never judgemental, it is hard to put down, and sits proudly on my bookshelf beside Kuper's 'Football Against the Enemy', Hornby's 'Fever Pitch', and , inevitably, Paolo Dicanio's autobiography ! One point though: when are they going to reprint Banks 'An irrational hatred of Luton' ?

4.0 out of 5 stars Bet You Laugh Out Loud!, 26 Nov 2001
By A Customer
If you like football you'll find this funny, if you like West Ham then it's hilarious.
This is about life as a dedicated Hammers supporter, warts and all!! - The ups and more often downs of watching the team over a few seasons - a really good read.
Just wish I could get hold of his previous book!
