5.0 out of 5 stars Rogan Never Sleeps!, 15 Jan 2001
By Mark Bradley "Leadgate Len" (West Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Having dropped enough hints at trips to bookstores my good lady bought me this book for Christmas. As always is the case with Johnny Rogan it's meticulously researched - and for the Young-ophile it's an essential purchase. Much of the work covering Neil's career up until 1981's Reactor was previously covered in Rogan's earlier work (Neil Young - published by Proteus back in 1982). The only grumble would be that the critical analyses of the lyrics tend to grate after a little while - and I'm not entirely sure they add as much joy to the book as the endless anecdotes from the likes of Crazy Horse members, etc - including the twice repeated Billy Talbot/Neil slanging match (I must get the 'Year of the Horse' video). The undoubted magical period from Tonight's the Night thru to Live Rust dominates with some excruciating insights into the mind of the author - and the saga of Young v Geffen records and the 'uncommercial records' suit is really entertaining. For me, however, the insight that 82's Trans - which was at once derided as one of the more pointless of Young's musical departures - was actually a reflection of his state of mind after his second son was born with cerebral palsy is an eye-opener. It all makes sense looking back. It'll be a long time before anybody writes a more authoritative biography than this - or a longer one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Flawed But Informative, 20 Jan 2002
By joebrody (London) - See all my reviews
Rogan is no doubt a writer of talent and insight as displayed by his books on The Smiths and The Byrds for example, and a fine source of info on the mystery that is Neil Young.

This book covers Youngs career up to the end of the twentieth century and contains an excellent overview of his unique output over some 650 pages. It is let down by some typographic/factual errors - was Live Aid really only viewed by 2 million people for example? Rogan also has a rather dismissive view of Neils 90s output (excepting Sleeps with Angels). Not giving proper credit for the excellent Broken Arrow and hardly even mentioning the criminally underrated Dead Man soundtrack.

More serious is Rogans rather too obvious Catholicism which he allows to colour his opinions somewhat irrationally at a few points in the narrative, dismissing Neils pro-choice views irrationally and unnecessarily. He is also a little too leniant on Neil at times - his 80s support of Reagan is too easily dismissed for example. His habit of apologising for the way Neil has treated CSN over the years is also a little grating. Neil is a flawed gem, a genius and one of the last true originals. Rogan does him justice but doesn't quite get the heart of the matter. All that said - buy this!

2.0 out of 5 stars Think before you buy., 12 Jul 2003
By A Customer
Yes you could buy this book. It does contain a lot of good information. But to be honest I don't think you should be reading somone else's analysis of Neil's music.

If your a true Young fan, simply buy his autobiography "Shakey" find out who Young is, and make up your own opinion about his music!
