‘This quirky guide to England’s most dramatic corner is now a minor classic.’

Product Description

Life is too short, holidays too precious, to waste time going to places which turn out to be boring. So the object is very simple - to guide you to all the is best to see and do in Lakeland, from mountains and lakes and walks, to museums, hotels, restaurants and the latest tourist attractions. It's amazing how each year new wonders appear, new places pop up, new services are offered. So it's vital, if you are one of Lakeland's 24 million visitors a year, to be as up to date as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars No holds guide to Lakeland by an local legend, 11 Sep 2009
By Mr. D. L. Preston "David Preston" (Dorset, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent update of a snappy guide which has been around for a number of years - in fact, it's the eighth edition. It gives you almost all you need to know about the Lakes (and tells you where you can find what's not there). It's done in a light hearted way and reads very easily. A pity Hunter Davies hasn't done some other areas in the same way, but he can only live in one place ! Excellent value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Guide to the Lakes, 27 Aug 2009
This guide is a continuation of a number of previous editions all from Hunter Davies. Thus they have all been a good read as well as a good guide. However, this is the last one that Hunter is to write; as he tells us, he has decided that the project has today become too demanding. In future the writing and publishing will be undertaken by associates and therefore, hopefully, less sporadic.

I have read all his Lakeland Good Guides and found them to be first class. In the past their value was that they were heavily opinionated, which meant both a high level of entertainment and a sure indicator of what was, and more importantly, was not worth seeing. Ever since the first guide, which didn't rate Barrow much, arousing the ire of the Town Clerk, this approach created some controversy. Little wonder then that the current editon plays things much safer. Whislt this does, in my view, detract from the value of the guide, nevertheless, if you are holidaying in the Lakes and want to be sure you don't miss anything of inerest in your all too short stay, there just isn't another publication to compete. Add to this the very reaonable price and the handy size and I would be amazed if any visitor were without a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide to the Lakes for families, 14 Jun 2009
We had an older version of this book from years ago so I bought this one to make sure the information was as up to date as possible. This book is very helpful to anyone making a trip to the Lake District. It is concise and honest and we found in previous years that the information was accurate. It's also very funny in places which makes it a pleasure not a chore to read throught it. At this price from Amazon, it's a bargain, but even at full price, it's a definate "must" for families going to this beautiful part of the country.
